Brazil Adopts NTCIP
The Brazil Federal Agency for highways has regulated that all private roads use the NTCIP family of standards and a current major ATMS procurement for the city of Sao Paulo (one of the largest cities in the world) specifies the NTCIP standards. Thus becoming the latest in an increasing list of National Transportation Agencies to adopt a standards based approach.
Regular readers of Intelligent News will know that over the past few years Intelligent Devices (IDI) has taken an active role in the development and promotion of a standards based approach to ITS deployments, in particular the NTCIP standards. IDI has made a number of visits to Brazil to conduct standards workshops and discussions with various transportation agencies to promote the NTCIP standards.
In 2008 the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in conjunction with National Electrical Manufactures Association (NEMA), organized a Standards in Trade workshop on ITS and TMS standards in Brazil. IDI took an active role in the organization and promotion of the workshop. Following the recent announcement in Brazil, Ellen Emard of NIST has said “This is great news.” Bryan Mulligan of IDI has said, “Excellent news!! It is great to see our efforts rewarded with NTCIP being adopted in these developing markets. IDI will continue to spend significant effort in the promotion of a standards based approach to ITS with our current major focus being the Eastern European countries.”
