Nebraska Snow Plows
Intelligent Devices has been awarded a new contract with the State of Nebraska Department of Roads for 100 Mobile Data Collection Units (MDCs) for their fleet of snow plows. These units will be spread across six regions with installation set to complete by February 2010.
The goal of this new project is to provide better service to the residents of Nebraska by optimizing winter road maintenance and snow and ice removal. This technology will allow the snow plows to efficiently and effectively treat the roadways and allow NDOR to monitor plowing activities.

Along with deployment of the MDC units, Intelligent Devices will also be remote hosting the Intelligent Snow Plow software for NDOR to facilitate the two way communication of data and road treatment recommendations between the snow plow operator and Meridian Environmental Services.
Here is how Intelligent Snow Plow will work:
- The MDC unit automatically collects information from the plow, such as plow blade position, road surface and air temperatures, spreader controller rate, and GPS location of truck.
- The plow operator inputs information through the touch screen interface on weather and road conditions, treatment materials, and the lanes being treated.
- All information is gathered in the MDC unit and then pushed to Meridian for analysis.
- Meridian in turn sends information on specific treatment recommendations based on regional, local and route specific weather radars and all the information received from the MDC.
This project is fully NTCIP compliant and can be expanded in the future for the addition of more snow plows and also allows for possible integration with an Advanced Traffic Management System.
