Letter from Bryan Mulligan...

Welcome to the spring edition of Intelligent News.

It is an interesting time to be part of the ITS Standards process at this time. All three standards development bodies are at crossroads in their respective standards programs, as follows:

  1. The NEMA 3TS Section is in the process of expanding its standards to include Portable Traffic Signals (with new NEMA members) as well as considering performance standards for ITS Measures of Effectiveness, Detection Systems and other items.
  2. The NTCIP Joint Committee has effectively completed the work of Center-to-Field Standards and is strategizing on how to position itself for future activities. Consultations between NEMA, AASHTO and ITE continue to see how we can build on the successes of NTCIP and mitigate to problems that we have all learned.
  3. As I write this letter, I’m in New Orleans for the ISO TC204 meeting. There is a resolution on the table for ISO TC204 to exert a leadership position in the implementation of Paragraph 10 of the EC- USDOT Joint Declaration of Intent on Cooperative Vehicle Systems (you can read the Declaration here). This action could change the landscape in the ITS standards development sector with ISO becoming far more assertive in this domain space than is currently the case.

On the domestic front, IDI has just completed an interesting contract for the Transit Commuter Information System in Minneapolis, MN. You can read about this project in this edition of Intelligent News.

Until next time…

Regards
Bryan Mulligan
