South Dakota DOT helps Intelligent Devices effectively pilot the new Intelligent Snow Plow

South Dakota is pursuing a solution that will minimize the effect of those winter storms that can hit fast and furious and wreck havoc on the public. A key part of this solution is the new IDI Snow Plow Kit, which is a revolutionary, low-cost approach that is used to allow the management of de-icing and plowing operations. Combining touch screens, GPS and IDIs WEBDirect technologies with NTCIP standards, South Dakota was able to track specific information about the snow plow truck and to monitor and manage plowing activities.
Heres how to use the IDI Snow Plow Interface Kit to deal with those winter storms:

The Dispensing Equipment automatically detects information such as blade positions, dispensing rates and road and air temperatures
The GPS receiver tracks the plow position, speed and direction
The Interface Kit provides a NTCIP interface that can be used with any NTCIP Central System. This combined with wireless Internet access, allows for the frequent retrieval of plow data and status.
The on-board Web Interface allows the driver to access Road Maintenance Decision Information and ensures effective communication with the driver
The WEBDirect technology allows the plow to be tracked over the WEB using any browser.
Using the above technologies, South Dakota was able to pilot the technology in their efforts to effectively deal with the winter storms that hit in early 2007, clearing their roads quickly and efficiently for their residents. The pilot was a resounding success South Dakota DOT are now in the deployment of this system on a hundred trucks for the next 07/08 season.
