Letter from Bryan Mulligan...
The traffic controller trade show season has passed this month, with the ITE Show in Pittsburgh and the IMSA Show in Louisville. I attended the ITE show, and saw that the exhibit hall was particularly poorly attended by City and State procurement officials. Vendors were generally disappointed. Booths were much smaller than in previous years, and the trade show just looked as if it was on the decline. It is imperative as an industry that we find a way for State and City procurement officials to travel, so that they can educate themselves on the latest technologies.
The NTCIP Joint Committee met via teleconference this month, and progressed several items. The most significant was the release of NTCIP 1210: Objects for Field Management Stations as a User Comment Draft. This important document has been many years in the making, and it describes the NTCIP requirements for Field Master controllers in closed loop traffic control systems. For everyone involved in the deployment of standards based traffic control systems, it is important to read the document, and get your comments in.
Parking Guidance is a new ITS application area where we are seeing more activity in the market, and in particular how these systems are making use of NTCIP to get away from proprietary protocols and systems. See the attached article for more detail on this interesting area.
