Letter from Bryan Mulligan...
Rural applications of ITS often have a greater impact than urban applications. In urban ITS, saving time and money are the primary motives. In contrast, the application of ITS in winter weather management in rural settings can be life saving. With the coming winter, several states are busy with the deployment of NTCIP based snow plow and weather station initiatives. Come see us at the Rural ITS Show in Traverse City, Michigan to catch up on the latest news and technology in this exciting new field
The NTCIP Joint Committee met via teleconference this month, and for the first time this year, I was unable to attend! However, there were no critical document votes scheduled, and so not too much to report this month.
Following on from our article last month on Parking Guidance, we are excited to announce a major new contract for Intelligent Devices. We have been awarded the technology contract for the NTCIP based Intelligent Parking system at Johannesburg Airport, SA. This $2 million system sets the standard for individual bay count parking guidance, and is explained further in the attached article.
Ramp Meters is an active field for ITS deployment, and IDI completed the deployment of a pilot scheme of NTCIP ramp meter controllers this month. Of interest to the NTCIP community will be how well the NTCIP Ramp Meter standard accommodated some very specific requirements of the overseas users of this system. See the details in the attached article.
