NTCIP Snow Plow Monitoring and MDSS …
Intelligent Devices is proud to announce an order for 100 MDC (Mobile Data Collection) snow plow controllers from the South Dakota Department of Transportation. This order follows the successful trial of four NTCIP snow plow controllers during this past winter.
The adoption of NTCIP as the communication protocol of choice for the Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS) follows an extensive study, and pilot scheme, covered by SDDOT in a completed research project. The objectives of the MDSS are as follows:
- Provide an effective winter road maintenance program by knowing in detail the road and environmental conditions
- Use retrieved data provided to inform the driver which chemical treatment to use, and the appropriate application rates. These treatment recommendations are served to the driver on a touch-screen embedded PC located in the driver‘s cab.
The majority of the requirements of the South Dakota DOT were covered “off-the-shelf” by the NTCIP 1204 Environmental Sensor Systems and NTCIP 1201 Global Objects. However, some additional functionality was required. SDDOT were able to accommodate these requirements by registering their node under NTCIP and adding additional data elements to meet their need.
One of the big advantages that open standards provides SDDOT is the ability to come out to public bid for their equipment. It was after this open bid, that Intelligent Devices was selected to provide the required equipment.
The timescales for deployment is to complete the delivery of the units by July 1, 2008. This will allow sufficient time for the units to be fitted during the summer and to be ready for full scale deployment by next winter.
